This program creates iPod/iPhone compatible audiobooks including chapters. It can be used in a shell (php script) as well as with the delivered graphical user interface. As most people have audiobooks split into many mp3-files, this script will enable you to use all the features of audiobooks (*.m4b). Needless to say that you can listen to this kind of audiobooks on Android as well. Appropriate players are Listen Audiobook Player or Smart AudioBook Player for example. You can find many others in Google's play store.

Because Nero encoder (NeroAacEnc) is no longer available and several packages are missing in current version of Ubuntu (mp4v2-utils), the time has come to rebuild abc - Audio Book Creator from the scatch. The new version is based on Python3 with accustomed PHP-scripts.

To fetch CD information again, abc -Audio Book Creator now uses Musicbrainz instead of CDDB and so all features are implemented in the new version as well.

Features

  • Ogg-Vorbis and MP3 support
  • Create audiobooks directly from CD - now up to 999 tracks
  • Audiobooks are displayed in the correct menu section on your iPod device
  • Chapter selection (with title-names)
  • Cover-art (if you have an appropriate "cover.jpg")

abc - Summary

The script and graphical interface of abc version 1.0.0 has been tested with Ubuntu Focal Fossa (20.04 LTS). You can find an overview of changes in the changelog below.

Usage

Convert MP3/OGG files to audiobooks

Select the directory where the MP3 or OGG files are located that you want to be converted. The next step is to enter the artists name, the name of the album, the title, the genre and the year when the album was produced as well. The usage of a picture is optional.

If at least 'Title' and 'Author' fields are filled, press in the next step the button "Create audio book!"
The convertion process will start immediately. When this operation has finished, you can take a look at the audiobook (*m4b) you just created.

Now you can upload your new audiobook including chapter-marks to the device of your choice.

Create audiobooks directly from CD

Just insert an audio CD and start the read-process. If you have an active internet connection, a query will be sent to Musicbrainz service to determine information about CD/Tracks. The data will be added automatically, if the query run successful. Otherwise you can enter the artists name, the name of the album, the title, the genre and the year when the album has been produced within the next step manually.
